As you well know, acts of incivility are very prominent in today’s society, from the mud-slinging of political candidates to the cruel acts of violence seen on our streets. Humankind has crossed over into a seemingly endless spiral of social depravity and hatred. But no matter how bad things are, each of us can find a place within our hearts that says, “I’ll do my part to be civil and treat others the way I wish to be treated. It starts with me!” If we all begin with that simple effort, we can see changes in our world, one person at a time. We now have a golden opportunity to highlight civility since we are about to celebrate the one-year anniversary of our Community Civility Counts Initiative which began in the Gary Chamber of Commerce Public Policy Committee in March 2015 with help from our partner, The Times Media Company. This celebration is known as “World Civility Day” and will be held on April 14, 2016 at 6:00 PM at the Majestic Star Casino Events Center, One Buffington Harbor Drive, Gary, Indiana.
We have been able to receive support from several local city governments, school districts, corporations, private enterprises and other persons and organizations who believe this initiative is very important. Many organizations across the country have also signed on in support of Community Civility Counts and our slogan “Together We Win!”
The Indiana State Senate and House of Representatives went so far as to officially establish state resolutions and feature a Civility Award which was given to some of their legislators in support of this initiative. The efforts of our legislators reflects their commitment to make Indiana the kindest place to live and visit.
The featured speaker at this event will be Dr. Clyde Rivers, Ambassador at Large for Burundi, Africa; Representative to the United Nations from the Interfaith Peace-Building Initiative; Founder and President of iChange Nations and Representative of Golden Rule International, who has delivered the message of civility and Community Civility Counts around the world. Other civility-themed groups planning to attend so far are the National Civility Center, based in Detroit; the National Institute for Civil Discourse, based in Arizona; the Center for Creative Solutions, based in Michigan City, Indiana; and Kent Roberts, co-founder of the National Civility Center (CivilityCenter.org), will unveil its new Political Civility Scorecard at our event. The scorecard uses an objective, non-partisan algorithm and evaluates speeches of political candidates and generates a civility score.
To register for the World Civility Day event, purchase a table, or provide a sponsorship please contact the Gary Chamber of Commerce at 219-885-7407. The cost is $20.00 per person and $180.00 for a table of ten. All supporting sponsorships should be made payable to the Gary Chamber of Commerce. This event is hosted by the Gary Chamber of Commerce, The Times Media Co., the Whiting-Robertsdale Chamber, the National Civility Center, the Greater Northwest Indiana Association of Realtors, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana.
We look forward to seeing you there!
“TOGETHER WE WIN!”
